Selective translation of poetries of dr.siddhalingaiah by Dr. MA Raveendra Hosadurga

 

Selective translation of poetries of dr.siddhalingaiah,famous poet,from poetry collection’uuru  saagaavaagi’(town becoming ocean) published by ankitha prakashana,53,gandhi bazar main road,basavanagudi,bengaluru560004.   I am grateful to poet  and his family members,publishers.published in 1916.

Village godess festivalof self deception

He-bufelo is not being sacrificed(killed)

Choudike  has broken into pieces

Has sit awaiting pegion

No face to civilisation and culture here

To flower garden,tobee groups no happiness

Siddhas buddhas unseen

 

Is breathing poison of nagaloka(snakeworld)

Is eating poison life crore

Burn  of enemity spreading to directions

Stopped all laugh festival

 

Town(village) becoming ocean

Is shaking (thattharisu)life group

Is calling  shout maari(death  godess) again again

Paarijaatha,needle jasmine,jaaji,

Nandabattalu,kanigale,coconut

Lotur thulasi thumbe flower

Along with my name

 

Came botom of earth came from middle sea

From delivered (begeted)mother’s body poisonous flame

Became dissatisfied  seven seas

Is drowning rising three worlds

 

Burning forest rising to sky high

Became burnt towns and srteet

Cry is manthra hahakaara is food offer

All trees creeper animals birds

Lost features,name form

Blakened sundirectionless moon

Burnt and fell star world

 

All gods kinnaras gandharvas

Without tollerating flame cried and died

Heaven had burnt into ashes

Without sun rise

Is there sarvodaya brother?

2)ancients and we:

In street of owner some how we had lived

In day and dark were pushing time

The spoiled rice  which they gave thinking as mrustanna(festival)

Coffee given in shell drank in kottige(cattle house)

 

In born liberation(nirvana)  our life spent

Somewhere fallen langoti(piece of cloth) saved respect(honour)

Seing our hunger  labouredin forest  wetland(gadde)

Begeted mother earth mother  got very much pained

 

Seing beats fallen to us cattle group pitied

At night star group poured tear water

We  Building bunglows for residence of lords(owners)

Spent winter by sleeping in tree bushes

 

Our reared dogs and sheeps on  drinking pond water

Though thirsty came without showing

our people’s tears only hindu great ocean

our grand and fore  fathers life is  residence of sorrows

 

carrying stools of town people lifting street street dirt

threw hole(dirt)school  to us  calling us  holemaadigas

cloth of dead body  thinking   yellowcloth(peethambara)toour body

for happening death waited day and night

 

all our elder people  your small childern

calllng go and come (in singular) blamed without knowledge

though knowing as though not knowing,without showing done wound

called your small childern sir buddhi

 

progeny of those who ate pain exploding

to call of inner witness youth people   responding

new world has shook(waved) hand   calling daily

now and then is blosoming deep red lotus

3)nonhealing wound:

Who came getting down from hill

Emiting many colours

Eye shining sun bright

Has spread around her

 

Fearing for half moment,without tolerating wonder

Asked who she is

Godess  of education  I am

She told me on that day

 

To exploited people of centuries centuries

Have done  education cheat

Spliting   veda studied tongue heating lead to heard ear

Pushed to severe hell

Is it justified tell mother I asked

 

Through out history like animals

Lived  my ancients

with people who got your contract

lived with them as servenr(slave)

 

in palace in teacher’s (guru’s)house

your light was shining

you did not see towards hut

it was nest of deep darks

 

not accepting my words  mother

vedavyasa valmiki

arkandeya durvasa muni(saint)

mathanga  rushies are not they yours

teling enited anger

 

caste defect non existing  equality

let there be  words of that time

those who became  victims 0f caste fire

what are those people who became ash

what happened to fingure of ekalavya

why there was killing of

why  was shambhuka killed

shall I forget the insult done to karna

in deep dark of ignorance

why did people got rotemned

 

don’t speak past over

see ambedkar and learn

to forget past brings favour

she taught like this

 

people who have  forgoten history

 can’t create historywords of ambedkar

I brought  notice of godess

 

Exceptions are not history

Life  of common  man  is history

Are troubling mind and body

Wounds  of centuries centuries

 

No answer to this near godess

I don’t know where she went

i was standing in front of rock

Had carried  burden(weight) of sorrow

When to crores and crores of gods blindness deafness  touched

Echala tree mother(echalamaradavva) comes and holds our hand

Eating muton of dead cow were doing festival

Beating drum(thamate) whole night were drinking dancing

 

Tree did not give shadow river did not give water

King did not give justice cloud did not rain

Cool air did not blow ,earth did not spread green

By walking in  dry forest we became rock

 

Town people death matter to inform all relatives

In sun light insevere rain were making us to run

To advertise news of death of town people

With much expectation  we waited standing siting

 

Beyond siver cloud sounded one noise on that day

Be (prepared)ready to organise fight   for education

Bind to principles told by buddha  guru

Dullness covered slept people rise up it  told

 

In hill in forest intown in street

In ten directionsanouncement started to soun

burden of world burden of noga carrying people rise and stand

 this word opened eyes of down  fallen people

Total destruction:

In burn of enemity smale of this world is fading

In supression of love and affection

My grand mothers lived in problems(difficulties)

Wearing insult and   degredation

 

Father and mother’s life were not different

Like dumb animals their life

Forest plant tree creeper animals birds

Found and pained their  grief(sorrow)

 

Difficulty of birds  I thought on that day

As  making mind happy song

On that day had counted  river’s suicide

As roaring  grand waterfalls

 

One day our people only, whom I had believed

Pierced  my back in  knife 

they never disclosed my mistake and tell

spilled crueal laugh around me

 

I became wood  for many funerals

Became ash with many  dead bodies

The kind of my death natural told people

Nobody responded tears for me

In maravanthe again you came to memory mother

As soundimg ocean of forgoten  joys

Seven line hill melting to sorrow of people

Flowing as riverIn dry forest land creeping as green

Shines as hombale

 

World loosing sleep to come to high level

Came down to earth as sun beam

Your chest’s garden garden sister’s amrutha eating

Population  crore was produced mother

 

Maari  and masanies taking away my prana(life)

While keeping on grinding stone and dancing

Calling whirl storm upseting maarie

you gave me rebirth  mother

 

burning poisonous arrows following  back  coming

hundreds of knives rushing towards me

when thunderbolt comes  and  hits me

coming from somewhere preventing stretching hand

hided and kept me in sky cover mother

 

washinhg my body mind in severe rain

calling near near in river sound

in sound of oceanembracing pulling

consoled me in song of birds

 

again be buding mother creeper of people’s mind

let go forward these sudugadu siddhas

even in inch inch of our this nonmooving world

let maravanthe   be sounding mother

7) support:

For rich servents

To servents hands and legs

To paired oxes bent horns

To horns golden colour  bunches(kuchchu)

 

To basement stone of bunglows

Arms and necks of poor

When cruel laugh’s(attahasa)  touches sky

Many  peoples tears hot fountains 

 

To running golden  deer

new enthusiasm is friend

to young player(sportsman)

desire of wining is friend

 

to sea bank’s huts line

bamboo wall(thadike) is  decoration

to revolution cry of  severe poor

body stomach fire (badabaagni)is moovment

 

for birth of uncountable gods and religions

people’s fear is support

to people’s hero who makes loot

innocence of voter is  source money(mula dhana)

 

to sunami which asks sacrifice of   lives and lives

sea anger is  severe dance(rana kunitha)

to endless blue sky

man’s wonder is  good cause

 

to know who is birth giver

mother’s words are  eternal truth

to coming beautiful world of equality

 hope itself is supreme guru

8)in your town,  mother daily death:

Opening mouth for mile length  swallowing delivered  childern

Gargling spiting vomiting blood

All jaathras and peoples gathered in celebration

By  shouting made to cry emiting poison

 

Hills moovedrocks rolled

No account of  how many were crushed

Frozened snow  was  rolling as hill

No account of those who washed(carried) aways

 

Under  remains of  building who had fallen as dead body

No people lift and bring out

Dead bodies fallen in streets and streets

 No relatives to recognise

 

Under fallen building

Caught   sister’s pain shout

Was becoming reduced  without being heard by nobody

She disappeared from this world

 

Getting irritated as snake rising hood

 Can we call  begeted(delivered) mother

One who  pulled guts of tender kids

Shall we call statue of kindness and patience

 

Eyes have dried up words have stopped

Line o people carrying desire of living

No differentiation between poor and rich here

Sounding cry for water and food

 

Pushing days  we  are  making  a   living

We believing your grace daily

You who protected and reared  today piercing  edge(knife)

In your town mother daily death

 

One which was  filled by females and males

Towns became  destroyed(nameless)

God’s festivals which were coming  filling body(mydumbi)

Villages  got disappeared

 

Colourful  cows goats sheeps

Became nameless to tell

All smile floods of town got dried up

Became  destroyed land  nepal

 

In city of katmanandu one remaining pashupathi(animal lord)

No devotees  to worship mindfully

The buddha born land boring graveyard

Did this surendered to tempoal(not eternal)

 

In beautiful heaven of  himagiri  mountain

Became created one severe hell

Earth and sky joining stars shaking hand

Dance of deer and peacock came to an end

9)slum’s princess:

Drive cart of sorrow friend

Towards black forest

There is slum’s princess

Resembling socity’s golden world moover

 

In forest of deep dark

In  middle of forts and dooms

Riding on tiger vehicle ,emiting red sparks

Is sitting princess

 

River of pain,sea of sorrow

Cloud of sorrow, who is this?

Explosion of sun,earth quake

Sound of thunderbolt who is this

 

Remembering exploitation of  centuries

Paining boiling in  sorrow

Burns in valcano

Flows as poison.

 

Eternal(daily )friend of sorrowful people

For dominance wickedness  war faced

In burning dry forest

Makes to pourgolden dream rains

In dried exploited mind garden

Grows red rose

10)new life:

Free away from bondages detach from hooks

Be free from all bondages

Where there is no base(nele) don’t try to stay

Don’t shrink from  negligence(degradation)

 

 In  dark forest bush don’t search  kajjaya(sweet)

No god on your part

The world of your dream is burning

Create a new world

 

Even if seen  don’t be as though not seen in illusion

Real light is path lamp to you

Burn into ashes all falses

Past is not on your part

 

Moon of full moon day is for your joy only

You don’t drown in illusion

Sun and moon  embrace you  dailyin love

Animal nature human world

 

Drowned in sorrow and depression you

Let poetry lass come and hold hand

You who have drowned paathaala(deep depth)

Let relatives of snake world lift above

 

Towards green valley you rise and come friend

What ever you  come across see  with  doubt

Don’t suffer by eating poison of belief

 

Shaking body standing with head lifted

Gives obstruction to you blue sky

At the time of crossing  seven seas

Become small pond rathna ocean

11) gratitude:

Will lift hand and join to mother earth myself

In order to pay  debts of many births

To heightful trees standing to touch sky

To cool air flower rain sunlight and rain

 

Silent humble statue has stood by himself

Wearing pure green to hill line

falling in hill  stretching body in field

to river  lne which is flowing  to reach  goal

 

rushing forward putting back rising up coming down

play of waves sea banks

hiding many secrets

deep dark dense forests

 

in sun and noon I found you mother

in  star world  laugh festival

in jump of deers dance of peacocks

in serious(gambhira) steps of elephants

 

barren land mother making heaven world

giving air and light pootecting (you are)

this fancy(style,bedagu)to this world bringing from some where

you are protecting peace of people

12)death:

Few peaceful faces which I have not seen

Few geetha and music which I have not heard

Not reachable to me many fountains of joy

 

When my death occurs will spill tears

My close people only one or two

Their debt  I will go without repaying

With  spent  sweet memories food box(butthi)

 

When my death occurs stone  hen singing

Stone basava  rises putting guturu(sound)

Hundreds of laugh flowers blosom in garden

Becomes very much light  earth  mother

 

Big neem big jaala rocks moov

Moov and come with my dead body(cadaver)

 On my grace will carve wtitings

Person who went without being understood

 

I don’t know from where I have come

death only is hard truth I know

from body of delivered mother  to  earth mother lap

to join is it not supreme joy

13)hope:

Snow is covering without considering day and night

Insevere chills word shaking

Lika wonder in wonder

This mind is warm some how

 

To people upset by hunger

There were people who made to eat poison

Kindness of gurus and elders

Has spread to directions

 

To make to drown ship of doubt whirl

God of belief is lifting up

Flower plant creeper  forgoten  identification

Shaking body  and hand  are  talking

 

In deep dark of dense forests

Has peeped some  golden ray

Loosing dark of heart and mind

Can it enlight  contineously

 

In drowsiness of  midnight

Which tone called me

This is tone beyond good and bad

I respond in faith

14) pallavi of death:

with support of rainbow

was standing myself in sky

beautiful  arch got melted

while seing only

 

to me who moov on cloud

had  relation wih stars

had friendship with gandharvas

had identification of sun moon

 

with  no poverty   or  richness in world

I   was  peaceful

Was in intoixication daily myself

Drinking amrutha

 

   can’t describe beauty of  that world

I myself was one dream

I was blosoming flower

Sang all raagas(tunes)

 

Where there is no day and night

Danced town of laugh

In sorrowless joyful   town

 Myself becoming friend f gods

 

Around  dark poisonous creatures

Where I am now I don't know

Heart has broken becoming pieces

Pallavi(budding) of  death is heard

15)useless expectation:

To bud out plant flower to blsom

To see fruit waited brother

To realise dream of equal society

Jada to moov  I  waited brother

 

For sound to appear waited in silence

waited for similies and metaphers

let disappeared poetries return

 daily desired and waited

 

to red to appear in kedage   garden

wandered in bank of ocean

where jasmine grows where smile splits

found pain and sufering

 

in all sounding talks in streets and lanes of town

searched your  tone and failed

when hope in inner depth collapsed

fell in self deception

 

I became away from earth’s nature

This talk this face is not mine

When heart and mind failed  stood like this tree

Will come one day which I exist

This is whose sorrow’s source(orathe)

Whose tears

 In front of wickedness with humbleness

All god men shed tears

 

Thia sea is my ocean sorrow of all

Without boldness and anger of  standing against sky long

Pain has spread as seven seas

World breafth

 

Solid severe wars filtered everywhere

For reason of blood tear

Every evening  red coloue in sea

 

Revolutionist’s who rised to hang delivered mother’s tears

Has become ocean here

To peace of tomorrow who fought and died

Pai has become ocean here

 

Here is beginning where it conceals

 On some day will sea and sky meet

18)rose:

In protection of false thorn

A rose is blosoming

This rose has no colour

Often looks black

 

If finds truth gets irritated

Attacks on truth

Is it symbol  in society

To runing exploitation and cheat

 

Black means god’s colour

But here opposite

Selishness is paramartha(philosophy)

All values are left

 

In towns and bars

In streets shines

Always rounding in intoxication

Slow walk’s body procession

 

I saw this black rose

At the end of life

I stand away and see this

In fear of death call

19)should fall slowly:

Don’t push anybody to difficulty

Let joy not bring ego

Don’t appear peeping face in other’s joy

Don’t live sowing  fear in another’s face

 

Life drowning rising  in show and jump(flirt)

Real real solidity are  miles   apart

To lip border talk no heart touch

In burning sunlight is burning tender  jasmine creeper

 

Today here tomorrow there from next where

Baseless life

Rising mirage of joywandering without goal

Dry leaf   this life

 

Without bending to wickedness ,without becoming burden to earth

Like mango maturing detaching stalk falling

As though all sounds have subsided

Should fall slowly

Rotening foul  smelling bodyhousefly attacked face

One eyed I loved

Full of her mouth relatives of poisonous creatures

Though crawling

I loved her wilfully

 

In latrine gutter in flowing ganga water

Who bathed and come

I embraced in my arms

Her skeleton contineously embracing

Kissed to leukoderma(white patched) lip

 

Where ever she walks  blood filtering thorn

Smoke of her breath touching

Line of white birds  fell to earth

 

No name no identity her existance

Even ants did not recognise(count)

Her body bad smell spreading to seven worlds

God’s became ready to oil bath

 

Sha had forgoten bath and honour

Like black rose  naturally

To white (patch) attacked lip false did not touch

Based standing in truth(real) in tongue

 

In her ugliness(astavakra) no wickedness

Loved  three breasted

 

Diged chest once as though for me

I saw on that day with wonder

Love amrutha vessel(amrutha kalasha) her heart

I bowd joined hands to that godess

21)mother’s memory:

Group of jamadagnies,lifting stone rock

When tried to finish

To feed milk to tender kid

soending time was saved on that day

 

parashurama did not kill you

did not allowd to live also up to end

 

from forest of saavanadurga brought wood bundle

what was light was sugar cane stick

kid is waiting brought with difficulty

to taste of sugar cane  was not equal

 

though dirt of our street  was filing spilling

punya having people ‘s house,cleaning smearing wiping

saw eyeful and enjoyed

 

in scolds fight in disputes

no failure in you,all success

in one vessel(bindige)  tap water fight

winning joy had excited

life long

 

on the day of death of  last son

in three vessels one  rolled I told

we did not know on that day  you are meru(supreme,high)

 

made hill to wear saree border

to silence of forest gave loud voice

responding to call of  dead friend

had gone to yamaworld once

 

though delivered(begeted) named as ‘maarakka’

did not ask for killing of husband and childern

to not forget  your memory

first son became aasadi(……………….?) today

to this bad lucked

who will remove drusti(vision)

bechchaarisuvaraaru(………………..?)

as soon as seen who responds through tears

22)again menory of mother:

Before sun rise sleeping childern

Pampering without disturbing sweet sleep

Going to dense forest bringing wood bundle

Selling in magadi market(sandy)

Brought up in affection

 

She washed  musure(remains)  in other’s house

Though tired by washing  dirty clothes

Was laughing  on seing begeted(delivered) childern

 

Balls(mudde) which she had brought to me was spoiled(halasu)

Withot meals I left house

When I went in anger making to stand in mid street

Pouring tears come child to house

She requested in humbleness shall I forget

 

Which line she crossed(ullanghane) why

Became target of allegation and blame

 

Mother of six childern my mother labouring

Becoming skeleton ended

In living time making foot dust

What  if responds by tears

Will mother come again will she shout or angry

Will through dust in anger.

Like houseless beggar

Like silent person without  mind

As though has forgoten  wife and childern

Spent with trees and plants

 

To heavy  noga(burden) giving shoulder

Ploughed wetland as ox

Was labouring without day and night

As servent of owner’s  street

 

Was watching owner’s garden

Was crushing in  aalemane(jaggery making house…?)

For stomach sake as garmets mill

You worked as a labour

 

When demons came In  vehicle

Got down for loan recovery

Joined hands held leg

Put tears in humbeness

 

If scolded no scolds in you

Called sir(buddhi) to those who hit

No enemity for enemity in you

You were living as buddha

 

You rised coconut tree

You rised areca tree

To heat of burning sun light

Burnt and became  coal

 

Father you come to dream

Like a feared cow form

you appear in net

 of sufering pegions  flocks

24)flower and ray:

Doubt doubt palm (katthale?)thorns

Grown in this town street

Pricking myself are filtering blood

In house and house even in sleep

 

To depth of paathaala(deep depth)to height of sky

Treading those who believed  are dancing jumping

Making desired statue soils

 

Is it enough only if eye exists inner eye should be there

Real knowledge of what is seen should happen

Even in soft sweet  vision there may be plan of murder

Like snake flowing in flower garden

 

The fire which gives light may burn towns and towns

Burning flame may  appear in heart

Beauty of female and male within a moment becoming dead body

May show skeletons

 

Between piercing flowers little flower is is blosoming

Attracting atention of world  towards itself

Somehow some why is appearing little

A ray in midst of deep darks

Who is this  luck god of dalithas

Who is friend of jyothiba pule

Neglected rich people and walked

Towards sufering bad lucked

Throws vision of kindnesss

 

In huts enlighting lamp

Education godess she is

From bondage of fear of caste

She will make free

Community had awaited

 

Fo release of exploited people

The pains which she experienced

Became poetries seas

Became valcanos at end

Her dress was fire flame

Her words were  thunder and thunderbolt

Her walk is towards equality

Thousand namanas to that mother

Vipasana is  expanding

Everywhere awareness is appearing

Full of blue sky

Buddha   bliss(prasannathe,satisfaction) is spreading

 

Removing dark of human heart

Procesion  of light is happening

In  tree plant creeper in forests

Desire of friendship is sounding

 

Streets and streets that and this side

All people are ours only

Life creatures animals brds

Are desiring  socity life(organisation,association)

 

In cave of dense forests

Ray of kindness is enlighting

In procesion of  hundred crore population

Godess  of equality is mooving

 

Path of punya(good deed)  brings joy

Sin delivers sorrow

Who  anounced cause and effect to world

Sharanus to sambuddha

To huchchappa master there extraordinaryness

The life which he lead is bold,direct

Those   who were  like forest plants

To group of girijanas he becoming supreme guru
