BHASA’S DRAMAS  COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH BY DR.RAVEENDRA HOSADURGA  FROM SANSKRIT (5 MONOACT DRAMAS,Ekanka  dramas)

1) KARNABHARA:

(after nandi director(suthradhara) enters)

Director- a request in arya  mahashayas. Oho when I engaged in  request(prayer)  only noise disturbance is heard!  Letr it be.let me see.

(in screen) Ayya ayya, prayer,prayer pray to  king angeshwara .

Dircter- all,I came to know (goes)

(later bhata(servent) enters)

Bhata-ayya,ayya,request war time has come.Like this inform to king Lingeshwara.

(goes forward and sees) see, This Anga king  wearing war dresses ,along with shalya king, going out from his mansion(palace) coming towards this side only. Aha! Important in war celebration,showing valience,to such him there is one kind of   heart pain  is present it seems. Why this pain which is not seen before!he is

(later  both karna and shalya enter.

Shalya king, Where is Arjuna  dive my chariot  there.

Shalya-all right(drives chariot)

Karna-Ahaha!Ayyo difficult! Previously I underwent curse of jamadagni

Ayya madra king  listen  news of my arrow.

shalya- I am also interested  (curious)in listening this  news.

Karna-   previously I  went near jamadagni’s son.

Karna-later, I did namaskarams to his feet and stood there only.

Shalya-later later jamadagni ‘s son  blessed and asked’who are you?why did you come here?” asked.

Karna- later after getting  rest for some time s once upon a timefruit,roots,samith.kusha(darbhe)  flowers in porder to bring  guru went. I also followd him. Later that guru wandering in forest with tiredness slept on my thigh.

Shalya-later?

Karna- later Inm divine yoga my two thighs vajramukha named creature drilled my thigh. To nmot to disturb guru from sleep  I tolerated that pain with boldness.

His body was wet by out poured blood. Guru suddenly awakened  and knowing my base(knowing my caste),On rising  anger fire flames, he cursed that let these arrows not give fruit when needed.

Shalya- Ayyo worshipable spoke difficulty only.

Karna- let us examine  news of arrow(asthra) and see.!(doing like that) these arrows are appearing strengthless(useless). Apart from that,

At the beginning closing eyes frequently forgetting body,keeping wrong step are sliping horses. Elephants are making to pour severe sandal  dana in war these indicating  defeat are appearing.

Cone (shankha) and dundubhies(war drums) are also silent.

Shalya-Ayyo what a difficulty has come!

Karna- shalya king don’t condole(show condolence).

 

Even if I die I will get heaven only,if won fame is got. These two in world  nmajority(nahumatha). I war there will br no defeat.

What more is,

These horses in war will never return  In speed these are equal to eagle(garuda), in famous kamboji family  have born. Thing to be protected  they will not leave without protecting.

Let there be  no  destruction (infinet) to gobrahmanas let there be reductionless to pathivrathas(chaste women)! To soldiers who does not show back  in war let infinet happen!

(alkshaya=eternal,immortal,indestroyable) let infinet happen to me to whom time has come! See now I am pleased.

 

Impossible is this  pandava’s war faces

Rushinh inside filling prathitha  character group  recreating,tieing dharmaraja  with arrow speed making bad people to fall, k illing lion, likr that as in forest will do good entry.

Shalya king now let us rise  chariot

 Shalya-all right Where is arjuna to there only drive(lead) my chariot(in screen).

Ayya karna,great bhiksha(alms) I beg.

Karna-(listens) oho  sound is strong!

These my horses  bold soft noteslistening lifting ears withot shaking eye lids bending neck there bringing musudi(mouth,face), missing control of parts  as though written in figure standing person’s  greatness is high.not mere dvija  he is rich true.

Make to call that brahmana. No no I will only call worshipable ,come this side come this side.

Shakra-hey clouds, all you go back sun(mear karna),ayya karna I beg great vhiksha(alms)karna- worshipable, I felt very happy.i am falling to feet of worshipable.

Shakra-(in himself)

 What shall I say? If I tell to become dhirghau(long life) he becomes long living.s If I don’t tell he will refuse as  dullard(muda). Therefore leaving these two what shall I say? Let me see,(light) Ayya karna like sun ,like rudra, like himavantha, like ocean let yout  success  be standing.

Karna-worshipable,   can you not bless to become long living? But this is]tself is  beautiful(splendid). because

By various troials  dharma is to be achieved

 Like serpent tongue  fickle is this king’s richness

 There to maintain citizens in intellectly

Though body is destroyed character remain.

 

Worshipable, In which you have desire? What shall I give?

Shakra: I beg great bhiksha(alms)

Karna- I will give you great bhiksha. Listen to my vibhavas(vaibhava,grandeurs).

 Along with calves enjoying with satisfaction  equal to amritha  milking(sqeezing) milk flow

 On prayer of  athies (poors) ,suitable young man\ cows are there. Brahmin  holy to you 

If you have desire of cow money keeping golden peaks will give thousand cows.  Shakra- cows thousands? for muhurtha time milk can be drunk. No desire karna no desire.

Karna- what,no desire to worshipable.listen this those horses are equal to sun’s horses suitable to rajalakshmi sadhanas whole king ,honourables took birth in honourable in kamboja.good charectered, rush in air speed and walk, in war they have shined walk,-these kinds of horses(vajies)  many thousands  In will give you.

 Shakra- Horse? Can rise for one muhurtha time no desire ,katna,no desire.

Karna- what worshipable is not willing/ I will tell another,listen:

Intoxication water has poured,in cheek bees

 Are drinking coming

Like cloud in serious announcement trumpeting(ghilittu)

Sounding. I will give many  danthies (elephants) group.

Shakra- elephant? Can be climbed for muhurtha time no desire,karana,no desire.

karna- what ,no desire to worshipable? I will tell anotherlisten. I will give countless gold.

Shakra- I will take and go.(goes for little distance)  no desire,karna,no desire.

Karna- Therefore I will win earth and give.

Shakra-what shall I do by earth?

Karna- therefore I wil;l give fruit of  agnistoma (yajna).

Shakra-what shall I do with agnistoma fruit?

Karna-If so I will give my head only

Shakra-ayyo,ayyo!

Karna-don’t be afraifd.worshipable should become pleasant. Will tell another thing listen.

 Taking birth along with  parts, my this body

There is one protective shield to pierce gods and demons don’t know. If it tastes you this kind of shield only  keeping with arrowsalong with kundalas(ear ornaments), with kundalas will give with love god

Shakra-(with joy) give give

Karna-(in himself) this only is his desire. Very chater krishna’s plan it might be?what ever may happen, not proper to feel sorrow.no doubt Should take(light)

Shalya- Anga king don’t give don’t give.

Karna- Shalya king ,no no , don’t obstruct.see

As time passes learnt  education will get destroyed

bound sources trees will fall

 water reaching  jalasthana(water source) also dries up what is given in homa(sacrifice) two remaintherefore can be taken(cuts and gives)

shakra- (taking,inhimself) let me take this. Previously only as victory of Arjuna all gods supporting which  That I have done now. I also climbing Airavatha  Arjuna and karna’s special war I will see.(goes).

shalya-anga king you are cheated!

 God’s messenger-ayya karna,as he took shield and  kundalas(ear ornaments) repented purandara  has blessed you. To kill one purusha among pandavas amazing arrow-vimala named this power take.

Karna- chi,I will not  take anything in return for giving.

God’s messenger- take according to words of Brahmin.

Karana- brahmana’s words? I have never crossed and behaved. When I will get?

Devadutha(dod ‘s messenger)- when you remember  then you will get.

DRAMA  2:MADHYAMA VYAYOGA:

(director (suthradhara)enters after naandi)

Director- request(prayer) in arya Mahashayas. Oho while I am engaged in  prayer only it is heard as though there is noise! Let it be,let me see.

Director- All right ,I came to know.

 One who tells bho,is brahmana only. No doubt. Some sinner is is making to fear doublessly.

Director- I came to know firmly. As son of  madhyama(middle) pandava in demoness called Hidimbe birn this demon fire is making brahmanas to fear Btrahmins who have nebver seen enemity. Ayyo,difficult difficult  Added with wife and sons  brahmanas  fare is very difficult.(goes)

Old man-Ayyo  who is he

First- bho thatha  I don’t know who he is!

Third- Bho thatha , who is he who is troubling us?

Brahmana-arya,who is who is paining(troubling) us?

Ghatothkacha- ayya brahmana( Brahmin) stop stopAyya brahmana don’t go don’t go.

old man-brahmana don’t be afraid. Don’t go,don’t go. He critixises and talks.

Ghatothkacha- Ayyodifficult.

Old man: Brahmana”in this forest  there are demons. Therefore travel carefully” like this  worshipable jala muni had told .do you remember!

That fear only is got.

 Womwn Brahmin(lady brahmana)- what is this you have become bold like this like kshathriyas.

Old man- what shall I do who ids bad lucked? Woman Brahmin-shall we shout?

First- mother,whom shall we shoult?

Old man-(lady Brahmin,don’t be afraid,don’t be afraid, to residence of manasvija(manmatha,kama? Suitable. On hearing  these words fear got destroyed. Here near only  there is pandava ashrama it seems.

First- it seems now there are no pandavas.oldman- son how do you know?

First- A brahmana(Brahmin) who came from their ashrama  told that they have gone to see  yajna(sacrifice) called Shathakumbha, at Doumya maharshi’s ashrama. He told.

Old man-Ayyo soiled(destroyed)!

First –thatha All have not gone. For maintainance of ashrama  have made madhyama(middlr one) to stand.

Old man- therefore it is as though all pandavas are here only.

first- He also has gone to distant place  to do exercise I heard.

Old man-ayyo,our desires became empty(remained unfulfilled)  all right child,I will talk to him and see.

First-no no,simply why to labour?

Old man- son,trouble is for family only.,this prayer..all right ,let us see. Ayya,will we get relief?

Ghatothkacha- yes,if you accept to agreement.

Old man- what is agreement?

Ghatothkacha- There is  worshipable mother to me.She called me”child for  ending of my fasting   for parane in forest area search for  a man and bring”like this ordered. Therefore I caught you.

Old man- hey,low demon!

Ghato- brahmana(better  god on earth).If you don’t give your son, your full family will get destroyed.

Oldman- is this your decision.

Brahmani (woman Brahmin)- arya, not possible, One who has husband  only is called pathivrathe(chaste woman). By this body which has got fruit I want to protect Arya and family.

Ghato- my worshipable mother will not accept  woman.

Old man- I will come with you.

Ghato- you are old go away (to distance).

First- thatha,I want to tell you something.

Oldman –tell, child

First- You send me with him.

Second- no no not possible.

Third- arya ,no no. To protect I am suitable.

First- child,that is not possible

Oldman- I can’t give up(send) first one who is dearer to me.

Brahmani(woman braghmin)- As arya is desiring first I want last one.

Second-  One who is bad to father and mother what If dear to anybody?

Ghato- I am happy (pleased). Come quick.

Second- I became blessed  by giving my prana(life). What high is friendship of relatives. For that sake to get friendship with yama is it not difficult to get?

Ghato-abba To this bramnin boy(vatu) how much  affection(vathsalya)  with oen people!

Second-thatha, thank you.

Second- I am blesses,mother  namaskarams to you.

 Woman Brahmin-child,live long.

second- I am blessed arya, namaskarams.

First –come child come

Second- I am blessed.

Third- Arya,thank you(namaskarams).

Second-svasthi (let good happen)

Third-I am blessed.

Second- Ayya man, I have to tell you something.

Ghato-tell,tell,tell quick.

Second- It seems there is pond in this forest. Myself who is ready to go to pther world ,I will go there and solve thirst and come.

Ghato- Firm minded,go. To mother food time is crossing.come quick.

Second-thatha, I will go.(goes)

Oldman- Ayyo ayyo we became robbed,robbed. Ha son you went off!

Ghato- brahma boy(vatu) is delaying Mother’s food time is crossing,what to do? Yes,I came to know. Ayya brahmana  call your son.

Old man- Aha! This my  talk is  so cruel as to cross  demon’s words.

Ghatothkacha- what,did you get anger?excuse,sir excuse. This is my nature’s defect. All right ,what is your son’s name?

Oldman-It is not possible to tell this also.

Ghato- sir, this is suitable. Ayya brahmana son, what is your yonger brothers name?

First- luckless madhyama(middle one).

Ghato- Madhyama name is well acceptable to him. I will only call(shout). Ayya madhyama ayya madhyama come quick.

(later bhimasena enters)

Bhimasena- whose tone is this?

 It is resembling tone of Dhananjaya.

Ghato- brahmana boy(vatu) is talking.mother’s meals time is crossing. What shall I do? All right,I came to know. I will shout loudly. Ayya mahyama(middle one) come quick

Bhimasena- who is thids  In middle of this forest obstructing my exercise is calling me ‘Madhyama madhyama’? all right let me see. (goes forward and sees)  oho how beautiful this purushaMale) is appearing. If he is seen,  he  is son of world valiant only. No doubt

Ghatothkacha- Brahmana vatu might be delaying. Mother’s  meals time is crossing. What shall I do now? All right ,I will shout loudly.’ayya ayya madhyama come quick.

Bhimasena  I am coming.

Ghato- he is no brahmana boy(vatu). Aha this man is very beautiful to look at? This man is attracting eyes visions towards him.

Ayya madhyama, I am calling you.

Bhimasena- therefore only I have come.

Ghatothkacha- you are also Madhyama?

bhimasena- nobody other myself myself.

Ghato- might be

Bhimasena-Apart from that

 I am middle in all works of  world.

(madhyama enters)

Madhyama- lifting lotus leaf  myself gave anjali to myself.

Ayya purusha(man) I have come.

Ghato- now only you have come! Madhyama ,madhyama ,come this side.

Oldman-(goes near bhima) ayya madhyama, protect brahmana family.

Bhimasena- don’t be afraid. I am madhyama ,thanks.

Oldman-live long like air.

Bhimasena-I am blessed. What is the cause of fear of arya?

Oldman- listen, myself living in  yupa village kurujangala  country which was ruled by yudhistira previously. Matarasa gothra(lineage)  kalpa branch  adhvaryu (leader,chief) keshavadasa named brahmana. To me in north direction  in udyamaka village  residing  koushika’s  brother called yajnabandhu is there.

 I am going along with my wife for upanayanam of his son.

Bhimasena- let path become troubleless. Later later?

Bhimasena-(in himself) what, mother’s order? Oho he is  struggling as guru  service interested! Ayya purusha  I have some matter to be told!

Ghato- tell quickly,tell

 Bhimasena- what is your mother’s  name?

Ghato- hidimbe named demoness. She married pandu son and became lucky.

Bhimasena-(with joy,in himself) like this! He is son of Hoidimbe. This ego(pride) is suitable to him.ayya man leave.

Ghato- will not leave,

Bhimasena – Ayya brahmana ,take your son. I will go with him.

Second- no no you don’t do like this

Bh imasena- Arya9honourable), that is not possible. I am born in kshhathriya family. Brahmins are worshipable. That is all. Therefore instead of  brahmin’s body giving my body  instead , wanto exchange .This is my desire.

Ghatothacha- like thi! Kshathriya ,therefore only pride.all right. I will kill him only and carry. Who will prevent him?

Bhimasena-Myself.

Ghatothkacha-what,is it you?

Bhimasena- yes,myself.

 Gahtothkacha- then you only come.

Bhimasena- I am having valience strength. I will not follow and go anybody. If you have strength  carry me compulsively.

Ghatothkacha- Who I am ,do you know?

Bhimasena –I know you are my son.

Ghatothkacha-what,your son?how your son?

Bhimasena- oho did you get angry? Tolerate. Kshathriyas know all people as sons only. Therefore only I told like that.

Ghatothkacha- you held weapon of those who feared!

Bhimasena- I don’t know what is fear. I need k now it from you. Tell what is that. After knowing charecters(gunas) and defects(doshas) , later I will  do  accordingly.

 Ghatothkacha- I will teach fear to you.hold weapon.

Ghtothkacha- how is it?

Bhimasena- This right hand itself is great weapon to me.

Ghatothkacha- This is acceptable to my father Bhimasena.

Bhimasea-who is that Bhimasena? You father  is equal to whom   world creater,  shiva,Krishna, shakra or yama.

 

Ghatothkacha- to all. Bhimasena-chi,this is false.s

Ghatothkacha- what,what? Do you tell false? Are you blaming my guru? All right I will pull this thich tree and hit. (pulls out and hits). Abba!  It was not possible to kill by this also! What shall I do?,I came to know. I will pluck stone from  this hill and hit. The stone which I have kept  will carry away your prana.

Bhimasena- wild elephant  though gets irritated  don’t know how to make tiger to fear.

Ghatothkacha- what, by this also it was not possible to kill him. What more shall I do? Yes I came to know.

Ghatothkacha-   (catching bhimasens in hold(pattu)

 With my arms I binded you. How will you cross strength of my arms? Hey,

Bhimasena-(in himself)  What  he has caught me! Hey, suyodhana, your enemy party is growing. Protect yourself. Ayya purusha be cautious.

Ghatothkacha- I am awaken (cautious) only.

Bhimasena-  releasing from  hold(pattu)

Leave pride that I am strong. I have seen all your  summary,valient

Ghatothkacha- What,By this also I am not able to kill. What shall I do? All right ,I came to know. Got by mothr’s grace maya rope is there. Inm that I will tie him and carry. Where is water? Hey hil, give water. See it is pouring.(does achamna reciting manthra).Ayya  purusha

 By my yama rope getting tied,forgetting body, you are coming with me. In ffestival  binded by ropes shakra flag (shakrsdhvaja) you are resembling.

( like this ties  by mata rope).

Bhimasena- what is this,I  am caught by maya rope,what shall I do now? All right,I came to know. By grace(prasada) of maheshwara  got maya rope liberation manthra is there. That I will chant where is water? Ayya brahmana son, bring water which is in kamandala.

Oldman-  take water.

 (bhimasena   does achamana, chanting manthra  releases from maya)

Ghatothkacha- rope fell. What shall I do now? All right I came to know. Ayya purusha ,remember previous agreement.

Bhimasena-  Agreement?remembered go forward

(both will go)oldman-childern ,what shall we do? Bhimasena(vrikodara) is going.

Ghatothkacha-(going near) mother,ghatothkacha , I thank(do namaskarams) As you were desiring from long time  for your food I have brought one person.

Hidimbe-(enters) son  live long.

Ghatothkacha- I am blessed.

Hidimbe- child, what kind of person you have brought?

Ghatothkacha-s mother! Man in talk only,not in valience.

Hidimbe- is he Brahmin?

Ghatothkacha- not Brahmin

Hidimbe- If so is he old man?

Ghatothkacha- not oldman.

Hidimbe- is he boy?

Ghato- not boy

. Hidimbe- if so let me see him.

 Hidimbe-what , is this man, ou have brought?

Ghatothacha- mother who is he?

Hidimbe- mad,he is god.

Ghato-to whom?

Hidimbe- to you and me

Ghato-what is example?

hidimbe- this only is example. Jaya to aryason.

Bhimasena-(sees) who is this? Devi Hidimbe! Hidimbe what is this?

Hidimbe-( in ear)  Aryason, like this.

Bhi,asena- In caste you are demoness not in behavior.

Hidimbe- mad, thank father(do namaskarams).

 Ghatothkacha- father, I am forest fire to  to that  dhartharastra forest.I do namaskarams. Fickleness of son should be excused. Without knowing I did not thank you first. Forget my mistake and bless.

Bhimasena- come son, come son. Your missing of method(regularity) is also  was beautiful only.(like this embracing)  chi;ldern who are forest fire to dhatharastra forest only  your fathers mind is desiring. Child,become very valiant and strong.

Ghatothkacha- I am blessed.

Oldman- so he is bhimsena’sson ghatothkacha!

Bhimasena- child, do namaskarams to worshipable to  keshavadasa.Ghatothkacha- wprshipable, I do namaskarams.

Oldman- you become  good charectered and fameful  equal to your father.

Ghatothkacha-  I am blessed.

Oldman- Ayya vrikodara( bhimsena,  wulf stiomached) ,you protected our family. You uplifted our family. We will go.

Bhimasena- all goods were got by your blessings. Near only is our ashrama. You may take rest and go.

Oldman-  Like this by giving jiva only  you  have shown  hospitality.s Therefore we will go .

 Bhimasena- worshipable, may go along with family. Again come and give darshan.

Oldman- all right ,let us do so.

(keshavadasa goes with wife and children).

Bhiimasena- Hidimbe, come like this child, let us send worshipable  keshavadasa up to door of ashrama and come.

 How ocean is lord to rivers

 How fire is lord to offers(ahuthies)

 How mind is lord to senses

Like that to us god upendra is lord
